Copilot+ PC was about to open a category that did not exist yet, with no vocabulary to borrow and no convention to break. Every AI story was about intensity. Faster, deeper, harder.

Microsoft’s compass pointed the other way. Whatever the technology could do, the story would be about what it could lift, so while the industry pointed at power, this platform pointed at daily life made lighter, brighter, better. With the studios Koto and BUCK, that idea grew into a language built on illumination. Warm light runs through every frame of the work, and the light is not decoration. It is the claim itself: this is what a computer looks like when it is on your side. The platform was named Life, brightened, and the name did the arguing.

Outcome

Illumination became the way Microsoft talks about AI well beyond one product, and the rest of the field has since followed. First words become the accent a category keeps.
